Home Website Hosting - Is it Worthwhile?
Can you use your home broadband to host a website and deliver it to the internet? Technically yes but hosting your own website is really only something for hobbyists at one end of the scale and major companies with their own data centre at the other.
There are numerous top website hosting companies who will host your site on their servers for a small fee and they will take care of the all maintenance, security and resilience issues, as well as providing support.
The only practical reason for home website hosting is to learn how to do so and to understand the issues. It will not save time, provide a better service or save money.
If you still wanted to go ahead with this you would need to consider the following:
ISP Contract:- Does your agreement with your (ISP) Internet Service Provider prohibit you from running a web server over your broadband connection? If so you may be able to buy an upgrade to resolve the problem. Remember that the speed of your website will be determined by the speed of your upstream link which will be considerably slower than the "headline" downstream speed.
IP Addresses:- Do you have a dynamic or static IP Address? Most DSL suppliers will give you a dynamic IP address which means that it can potentially change each time you connect. For an additional fee you can usually change this to a static (or fixed) IP address. The IP address is used to find your website so using a fixed address is better. However, it is possible to use a dynamic IP address by using the services of a dynamic DNS provider.
Domain Name:- This will need to be purchased and registered the same as if using a hosting provider.
Hardware and Software:- You could host your website on your PC using Microsoft's IIS (Internet Information Services) web server but note that to run the latest version you need Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Running a web server raises some serious security issues and you may feel that it will be better to use a separate computer as your server. This could provide an opportunity to use Linux with the Apache web server.
The challenge of setting up the software may be the reason for doing all this but afterwards you will also have to consider server updates, problem diagnosis, security auditing, hardware maintenance (or failures) to name a few. If the server goes down you will need to fix it yourself and these things usually happen at an inconvenient time (what if you are away at the time?).
On-going Costs:- Needless to say hosting a website means that your server needs to be permanently running and you need to consider the significant electricity costs this will incur.
My view:- If you want to have a professional (or business) site you need to have it hosted professionally. This will provide a better service to your users and be the cheaper option. Home website hosting can be done but it should really be regarded as a hobby for use with non-critical sites.
