Hosting Providers And Their Advertisements
When choosing a qualitative hosting you may come across with many pitfalls, unknown to beginners. Many hosting-providers embellish the services or ignore several important points. It is made on purpose to involve as much clients as possible. Frequently hosting-providers do not tell a complete "truth" about offered services. Describing the services, the companies often tend to hide some nuances which can be essential enough for a user but which can lead to a client's loss. The case is usually not in hosting companies' wish to mislead their client. As a rule there is no deception, more often all nuances are given as notes to the price-list printed with very small letters in the bottom of the page or they are given in the form of the contract application. On the one hand, the client cannot accuse the provider in any information hiding, and on the other hand there is always a high probability that the person, who does not understand nuances of the hosting-providers price policy well, will detect only after payment that has bought the product which he really did not intent to. And after all the set of marketing actions and tricks is standard enough. It starts with the fact that hosting-providers, as well as cellular service providers (and not only they), do not like very much to specify the prices taking into account the tax to the added cost. And they can be understood, without the VAT the price for services looks much more attractive. It's necessary to mark that it is considered a good form rule to inform whether taxes are included in the specified prices or not, somewhere on the top of the page before the price-list or as the first item in notes. But there is a great number of providers who do not give any information about this on their sites. So the client can detect the real cost increase already only after getting an account.
Do not trust various advertisements on providers' servers, for example, about price fall or special actions arrangement limited to certain time frames. At more close examination you will see that this price fall for one service can easily mean the increase in some other services (this is the things about which the provider naturally prefers to keep modest silent), and any special spring action like «free domain if you pay for one-year hosting using» then will turn into summer-autumn hot action.
One more advertising gimmick how providers involve clients is advertising about service limitlessness: for example, traffics, quantity of e-mail addresses or subdomains. Actually, The unlimited traffic does not exist at all: simply attendance of the majority of sites is not so big and the provider can give it to you, say some minimum volume of traffic according to a certain tariff plan. Only provider knows what the limit is: the traffic limit can be omitted on a server or it is mentioned, but not on the page where a price-list is for services. Users will get to know that they exceeded a certain limit only post factum when the provider asks to change tariff schedule.
Unlimited quantity of e-mail addresses is also, generally speaking, a fiction: in other words, there can be as much e-mail addresses as it is needed, but really all letters will come (will be "be gathered", to be precise) in one mail box. And an unlimited quantity of mail boxes cannot exist by default: their quantity in any case is limited by the size of each box, their cumulative size cannot exceed the common disk quota within the limits of the tariff schedule.
Another story is CGI-script support. Different providers can mean absolutely different things. If the hosting-provider says that the company supports CGI-scripts, make sure that this service contains not only possibility of usage of a certain standard set of already installed scripts (usually this set includes a forum, a guest book, a chat, counters etc., that is a usual set of tools and for servers of free hosting), but also possibility of your own scripts usage.
Not always all these "nuances" are accurately registered on a site of the hosting-provider. It has one reasonable explanation: too precise and peculiar description can be too large to read and a common user will not understand all those peculiarities.
On the other hand the provider can be not always interested in a very detailed description of the given services. After all, as it is known, the most difficult thing is to involve a new client, and keeping a person as a client is another matter. The given rule works most vividly when it concerns domains registration. For example, very frequently at primary purchase of hosting for any large period of time (usually it is 6 months or a year) providers register for the client a free domain. But such "discount" like this very often is one-time bonus and works only at the first order, in a year a domain re-registration, most likely, will cost money.
Besides, very often the domain is registered not on the client but on the hosting-provider. This makes almost impossible for the client to change the provider.
At last, all written above absolutely does not concern in any way quality of services by that or other hosting-provider. As experience shows, you can really check up a quality degree of the services only using them. Of course, you can read what others write at forums, but to trust them fully is not a good idea. You never know who wrote it and with what purpose: it can be both really an independent opinion of a certain person and provider's advertising, or on the contrary an anti-advertising from competitors.
In any case be ready to change a hosting-provider - this happens not so rarely. And it is quite possible that after a while you will come across with the need to change a hosting-provider. For this pay attention to terms of money return in case of contract cancellation.
